Le Hadj n'est obligatoire qu'à tout(e) musulman(e) qui :
est pubère et sain d'esprit
dispose des moyens financiers suffisant en sus de ce qui est destiné à ses besoins essentiels et à ceux des personnes qui sont à sa charge,pour s'acquitter des frais liés au voyage (aller et retour) vers Makkah et au séjour sur place pendant la période requise
Néanmoins, pour que l'accomplissement du pèlerinage soit fardh pour quelqu'un, il faut aussi, en sus des conditions citées ci-dessus :
que l'homme/la femme concernée soit valide (selon l'opinion de beaucoup de oulémas)
que la femme puisse se faire accompagner de son mari ou d'un mahram qui soit sérieux lors du voyage (Un mahram est un personne pubère et avec qui le mariage est interdit pour toujours. Le garçon (avec qui le mariage est interdit pour toujours) qui est proche de la puberté et qui est capable de se débrouiller et de s'organiser seul a le même statut qu'un mahram adulte)
que la femme ne se trouve pas dans la 'iddah (La ‘iddah est la période d'attente imposée à la femme après un divorce ou après le décès de son époux et durant laquelle il lui est nécessaire de rester chez elle (sauf cas exceptionnel).
Règlement : Selon l'opinion de beaucoup de oulémas, le musulman non-voyant ou handicapé (qui ne peut pas se déplacer seul) qui a suffisamment de moyens (suivant les critères énoncés précédemment) pour être concerné par l'obligation du Hadj mais qui ne peut effectuer le pèlerinage lui-même en raison de son infirmité doit nécessairement déléguer quelqu'un pour accomplir le pèlerinage de sa part. Il devra prendre en charge les frais du voyage de cette personne.
Règlement : La femme sur qui le Hadj est obligatoire mais qui ne peut l'accomplir parce qu'elle se trouve dans la 'iddah n'est pas dispensée de son devoir de façon définitive : Elle devra donc effectuer son pèlerinage par la suite, lorsqu'elle en aura a la possibilité.
Règlement : Dans le cas où une femme a suffisamment de moyens pour effectuer le pèlerinage mais que, durant toute sa vie, elle ne trouve personne (répondant aux conditions requises) qui puisse l'accompagner pour le voyage, il lui est nécessaire, avant de mourir, de demander par voie testamentaire à ce que l'on accomplisse le Hadj de sa part en utilisant les biens qu'elle a laissé en héritage.
Règlement : Dans le cas où une femme mariée (qui dispose de suffisamment de moyens pour faire le Hadj) trouve un mahram (répondant aux conditions requises) pour se faire accompagner durant le voyage, son époux n'a pas le droit de lui empêcher de partir.
Règlement : Dans le cas où quelqu'un était valide et disposait de suffisamment de moyens pour le Hadj mais qu'il se retrouve par la suite affecté par un handicap quelconque et ne peut ainsi plus s'acquitter de son pèlerinage obligatoire, il lui est nécessaire de déléguer quelqu'un pour accomplir le Hadj de sa part. Il devra prendre en charge les frais du voyage de cette personne.
Règlement : Si une personne musulmane ayant atteint l'âge de la puberté et saine d'esprit accomplit le Hadj alors que cela ne lui était pas imposé, sa responsabilité sera définitivement dégagée par rapport à ce rituel ; en d'autres mots, il ne lui sera plus nécessaire d'accomplir d'autre Hadj durant toute sa vie.
